Types Of Tungsten Electrodes
Ceriated Tungsten, Lanthanated Tungsten, Thoriated Tungsten, and Zirconiated Tungsten are all types of tungsten electrodes used in Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. Each type has unique properties and characteristics that make it suitable for different welding applications.
Ceriated Tungsten: Ceriated tungsten electrodes are also known as "grey" tungsten electrodes. They contain 1-2% cerium and have a lower work function, which makes them easier to start and maintain an arc, even at low amperages. They are ideal for welding applications that require a stable arc, such as welding thin materials and pipes.
Lanthanated Tungsten: Lanthanated tungsten electrodes are also known as "gold" tungsten electrodes. They contain 1-2% lanthanum and have a slightly higher work function than ceriated tungsten electrodes. They are preferred for welding applications that require higher amperages, such as those involving thicker materials, and are often used in DC welding.
Thoriated Tungsten: Thoriated tungsten electrodes are also known as "red" tungsten electrodes. They contain 1-4% thorium and have the highest electron emission rate of all the tungsten electrodes. This makes them ideal for high-amperage applications such as welding thick materials and aluminum. However, they pose a health hazard due to the radioactive thorium content.
Zirconiated Tungsten: Zirconiated tungsten electrodes are also known as "white" tungsten electrodes. They contain 0.15-0.4% zirconium and have a low work function, which makes them suitable for AC welding. They are also preferred for welding materials that require a higher level of cleaning action, such as stainless steel and aluminum.
