Niobium Aluminide Description
Niobium aluminide (Nb3Al-xTi) -based intermetallics have attractive combinations of room- and elevated-temperature fatigue and fracture properties. These alloys have good strength at room temperature (-5 to 30 pct), toughness at room temperature (-40 to 120 MPa/m), and resistance to fatigue cracks at room temperature and high temperatures, like other alloys made with Ti, Nb, and Ni.
In the past few years, scientists have looked at using Niobium aluminides for building materials that can work at higher temperatures than regular nickel-based alloys. Niobium aluminides are very strong when heated up to 1000 degrees Celsius. By adding a ductile phase, brittleness at ambient temperatures is reduced, and poor oxidation resistance is improved.
