Chromium Nitride Description
Chromium nitride (CrN) is gray black powder, stable to water, acid and alkali. It is not only an excellent additive for alloys, but also has good physical and mechanical properties, which is better than titanium nitride in wear resistance. Mainly used for wear-resistant coating. It can be used for anti-corrosion metal coating materials and plastic molds, as well as multi-component coating materials. The CrN film prepared by hollow cathode ion plating has two-phase structure of Cr + Cr2N, with grain size of 20-70 nm and hardness HV 22 GPa. After vacuum annealing, it can be increased to HV 35.4 GPa. Its wear resistance is better than that of CrC film. Cr + Cr2N or single-phase CrN can be obtained from CrN films by reactive sputtering. The hardness of CrN films is HV 20-25 GPa (the hardness of bulk CrN is HV 11 GPa).
Chromium nitride is also used on medical implants and tools. It is also a valuable component in advanced multicomponent coating systems, such as CrAlN, for hard, wear-resistant applications on cutting tools.
