Zirconium Flange Description

SSC specializes in producing high purity uniform shaped zirconium flanges. Flanges are often used to connect pipes or steam cylinders. SSC offers custom flanges with annealed or hard tempers and will meet most of the common Mil spec or ASTM standards. Most flanges have external ridges with circular holes so screws can provide extra safety and strength. In addition to standard alloys, SSC also specializes in corrosion resistant alloys, high temperature applications, and custom shapes and forms, including custom hole drill locations and threading.

Zirconium flanges are most beneficial when used is in hydrochloric acid processes with temperatures above the boiling point and in the absence of oxidizing impurities. In sulfuric acid, zirconium flanges are resistant to temperatures well above boiling and at acid concentrations up to 70%. Zirconium can be used in all concentrations of nitric acid up to 90% and temperatures up to 200℃. Zirconium is also resistant to most organic media and is considered one of the most corrosion resistant material in virtually all acetic acid solutions.

Though aeration does not affect the resistance of zirconium flanges, even small amounts of oxidizing media such as ferric or cupric chlorides will greatly decrease its corrosion resistance. In addition, acid in the presence of oxidizing halide contaminants and can accelerate the rate of attack on zirconium flanges even at low concentrations. Use of zirconium flanges in the presence of fluoride ions is also not recommended, even at low concentrations.
