Chromium(II) Chloride Description

The anhydrous chromium(II) chloride is white when pure, however commercial samples are often grey or green. It is hygroscopic and readily dissolves in water to give bright blue air-sensitive solutions of the tetrahydrate Cr(H2O)4Cl2.

Chromium(II) chloride is soluble in water. It is insoluble in alcohol and ether. It is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, water and active metals.

Chromium(II) chloride is used in the condensation of aldehydes with trisubstituted chloroalkenes as well as in the synthesis of a highly active precatalyst for ethylene oligimerization. Further uses of chromium(II) chloride include the conversion of terminal olefins into trans-iodocyclopropanes (in conjunction with iodoform and tetraethyl ethylenediamine) with excellent results; generating bis(indenyl)chromium dimers and other various related products.
